I put my money where my mouth is and raced my first sprint triathlon since 2011 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.multisportcanada.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">MultiSport Canada<\/a> Woodstock. A solid field turned up\u00a0for this outstanding event, featuring the better part of Ontario&#8217;s non-drafting triathlon talent on the men&#8217;s side. Here&#8217;s a brief race report with guaranteed laughs.<\/p>\n<p><b>Top 5<\/b>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sportstats.ca\/displayResults.xhtml?racecode=106945\" target=\"_blank\">full results<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>1. <a href=\"http:\/\/lsanderstri.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lionel Sanders<\/a>, 57:33<br \/>\n2. Jeff Scull, 1:00:02<br \/>\n4. <a href=\"http:\/\/alexjvanderlinden.blogspot.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alex VanderLinden<\/a>, 1:00:48<br \/>\n5. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GarrickLoewen1\" target=\"_blank\">Garrick Loewen<\/a>, 1:01:18<br \/>\nHonorable mention to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JackLaundry93\" target=\"_blank\">Jack Laundry<\/a> (59:19) who appears to have been DQ&#8217;d.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;\" href=\"https:\/\/mikaelstaer.com\/clients\/cbeals\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Woodstock-podium-2014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mikaelstaer.com\/clients\/cbeals\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Woodstock-podium-2014.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mikaelstaer.com\/clients\/cbeals\/dev\/?p=470\" target=\"_blank\">my pro debut at Texas 70.3<\/a> last month, my training has seen some major changes, most notably a much more\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.canal-insep.fr\/fr\/training-periodization-deep-root-cultural-heritage-and-innovative-paradigms-2013\/ei_13_10_va_pr_stephen_seiler-mov\" target=\"_blank\">polarized intensity distribution<\/a>. Although that race went well, it took a serious toll on my body and provided some\u00a0hard learned lessons on periodization and recovery. I finally rebounded in May with a revamped approach and renewed focus.<\/p>\n<p>With some <a href=\"https:\/\/mikaelstaer.com\/clients\/cbeals\/dev\/?page_id=149\" target=\"_blank\">high priority races on the horizon<\/a>, I didn&#8217;t really let up for Woodstock. The week&#8217;s training went well, but I woke up on the wrong side of the bed (and the sunrise) on race morning, sort of like this:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/vine.co\/v\/M1OAW0tiPKY\/card?mute=1\" width=\"500px\" height=\"500px\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><b>Swim<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>~8th out of the water<\/p>\n<p>Despite the polar vortex-chilled water and caffeinating rather prodigiously, I couldn&#8217;t get amped up before the start. I was really mellow, and dude, the front pack was harshing on my mellow. So off they went and I paddled along behind, sort of like this:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/vine.co\/v\/b3MQ6wjEhtq\/card?mute=1\" width=\"500px\" height=\"500px\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Except my technique was much better than that, thanks to the tireless efforts of my swim coach, Tim of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/magnoliamasters.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Magnolia Masters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One thing I&#8217;m not mellow about is goggles. Too often they leak, fog up or fall off during races. I stress more about my goggles than the swim itself. I can&#8217;t wait to leave my goggle anxiety behind by welcoming\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/vorgee.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vorgee<\/a>\u00a0as a sponsor. Australian goggles are like Italian leather or Swiss watches: primo!<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/mikaelstaer.com\/clients\/cbeals\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Woodstock-swim-2014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mikaelstaer.com\/clients\/cbeals\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Woodstock-swim-2014.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<h2><b>Bike<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>2nd fastest split, 1st\u00a0off the bike<\/p>\n<p>Feeling invigorated from my 15\u00b0C <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">ice bath<\/span> swim, I was ready to get to work. My improvement in cycling over the winter has given me newfound confidence and aggressiveness on the bike. I quickly hammered my way into the lead, sort of like this:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/vine.co\/v\/M1nmPuMPKKp\/card?mute=1\" width=\"500px\" height=\"500px\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Power geeks can find my\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.strava.com\/activities\/145517069\" target=\"_blank\">power file on Strava<\/a>. Following the <a href=\"https:\/\/mikaelstaer.com\/clients\/cbeals\/dev\/?p=469\" target=\"_blank\">success of my winter bike training program<\/a>, I&#8217;ve continued to do 90%+ of my cycling on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.racermateinc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">CompuTrainer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Run<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>2nd fastest split, 2nd overall<\/p>\n<p>I held a 30 second lead heading out on the run. But 30 seconds is the blink of an eye with the likes of Lionel Sanders in hot pursuit! I clung to my lead until the turnaround when Lionel made the pass. I tried to hang with him, but it went down sort of like this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mikaelstaer.com\/clients\/cbeals\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/tumblr_m815drKX471qlkly81.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1256 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mikaelstaer.com\/clients\/cbeals\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/tumblr_m815drKX471qlkly81.gif\" alt=\"tumblr_m815drKX471qlkly8\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After that beat down, I cruised it home with 2nd place locked up.
